Rupert Newelt

Another one of Ezra's in-my-head lovers.

Rupert is the brother of one of Ezra's dearest friends Mariam. Rupert is very anal, condescending and pompous. very much a realist. He thinks Ezra to be foolish and childish.

He isn't super handsome, which is what Ezra is usually into, but he's more...um, more...It's like Emma and Mr. Knightley! They don't get along, but they do at the same time. It's passion! It's like, cute opposition! :3 Plus, Ezra thinks he has the most dashing voice.

The way Ezra and Rupert meet is through Mariam, obviously. Her brother comes to stay with her over the summer, and Mariam sets up a little tea thingy with her, Rupert and Ezra, because she thinks the two men will get along famously! Because Ezra gets along with everyone famously.

So, at the tea, Rupert is very quiet, very grumpy and leaves early to 'attend to some business'. Ezra just assumes the man is like his father, (who has pretty much locked himself inside of his house after the death of his wife several years before), a strange, shy, hermit type of man. In fact, Mariam begged her brother to tell Ezra the story of when he was in India and rode an elephant. Rupert seems annoyed and simply says: "When I was studying abroad in India, I rode an elephant." And that's his whole story.

Anyways, when there's a party, to which both Ezra and Rupert are mutually invited to, Ezra sees the man across the room telling that elephant story. Except he's being all vivacious, and boisterous about it, going into great detail. Ezra goes to speak with the man later on, only to be brushed off coldly, and is then immediately insulted and furiously interested in the man. He doesn't quite understand why Rupert doesn't like him! He has done nothing wrong, said nothing rude or out of place. He's pretty much baffled.

What Ezra doesn't know is that Rupert only acts this way around Ezra because he feels a twinge of nervousness, though he doesn't perceive it to be so. He thinks that he just doesn't like Ezra, and what he doesn't know is that he's attracted to Ezra, and that is why he's actin' like a douche bag.

They then become lovers when Rupert starts to work with Ezra's father and blah blah blah. They get into an argument about love, because Rupert says that he doesn't believe it truly exists, and if it does, then it's no good because 'every problem in every fantastical story you read Ezra starts off with love being the problem. Not the solution.'
